OS X 10.11 Issues

This webpage will show incompatibilities and issues that users at Iowa State may have with OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). Please send incompatibilities and issues you have encountered that will affect the ISU Community to the macosx-admin@iastate.edu mailing list.

Creative Cloud RemoteUpdateManager

The command line RemoteUpdateManager (RUM) tool that is installed with the Creative Cloud packages that is built by ITS currently gets installed to /usr/sbin/RemoteUpdateManager. With an update to Creative Cloud Packager 1.9.2, RUM will now be installed to /usr/local/bin/RemoteUpdateManager.

ITS will need to rebuild all of the Creative Cloud packages or see if there is a way to update just the RemoteUpdateManager tool.

Box Sync

If you use Box Sync, you will need to download and install the lastest version of Box Sync from iastate.box.com.

Deep Freeze

Deep Freeze 6.0 is needed for OS X 10.11 compatibility. See Software License Database on how to obtain the new version.

Gatekeeper

Gatekeeper builds on OS X’s existing malware checks to help protect your Mac from malware and misbehaving apps downloaded from the Internet.

Gatekeeper applies to apps downloaded from the Internet. Apps from other sources, such as file servers, external drives, or optical discs are exempt, unless the apps were originally downloaded from the Internet. Gatekeeper’s default option is to only allow you to run downloaded apps that come from the Mac App Store and identified developers.

ITS helper apps and installers are not currently signed to bypass Gatekeeper. However, there is method that you can use to open these apps. See the section titled How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper from this Apple article for details: OS X: About Gatekeeper.

PaperCut Client

Papercut Client 15.1 may continue to work but official support for OS X 10.11 was added in Papercut Client 15.2 and we will update the server to that version soon.

Update (October 26, 2015)

All of the ITS PaperCut servers have been upgraded to version 15.2.

Microsoft Lync for Mac 2011 Update

The October 2015 update for Microsoft Lync for Mac 2011 14.2.1 added support for OS X 10.11. The update is avaiable from software.iastate.edu.

Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 Account Sync Hangs

Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 on OS X 10.11 hangs during account sync operation.

Update (October 7, 2015)

Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.5.6 update. This problem is described in KB 3098396.

Issues that the update fixes

This update provides the following fixes to improve Mac OS X El Capitan compatibility:

• The hang situation that occurs during an account sync operation in Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 is fixed.

Microsoft Outlook 2011 and Office 2016 Freeses

Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2016 may freeze using OS X El Capitan.

Hello everone,

We are aware of the issue with Outlook 2011 on El Capitan and of Office 2016 on El Capitan.

*We are working on a fix for 2011 and for 2016 we are working closely with Apple to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Unfortunately we do not have any timelines for either fix, please stay tuned and thank you for your understanding.

System Integrity Protection is a security technology in OS X El Capitan that’s designed to help prevent potentially malicious software from modifying protected files and folders on your Mac.

Symantec Endpoint Protection

Update to Symantec Endpoint Protection for Mac 12.1.6. The update is available from sitelicensed.iastate.edu.

VMware Horizon Client

The VMware Horizon Client (used to access virtual machines on the ISU VDI Infrastructure) has been updated to version 3.5 to add support for OS X 10.11. For more information, see VMware Horizon Client Release Notes.
